I went to the main post office downtown on Thursday around 2:00 and there was NO LINE...15 mins in and out...it's at 401 Franklin. They have applications at the door and they can take your picture there too for $15. I filled out my application online though and took it right in. Hope this helps!

You can't get a passport at any post office, but there are several in town. You need to go to www.usps.gov and get the information. In addition, some post offices require you to make an appointment. Others, like the Bellaire post office allow walk ups with no appointment, but expect to wait two or three hours because they have only two people processing the forms and there is a line. If you go there in the morning the line is less. My wife and I both got passports last May. She went early morning (8:00 or so) and waited an hour. I went on a Friday afternoon right after lunch and it took nearly three.
When you get into the little offices the forms only take five minutes to fill out per person, and that is usually for filling out the express form.
Have your driver's licence AND your birth certificate to speed things up a bit. You want to show it is you. You'll need passport photos. My wife and I did this at Costco, but Kinkos has the service as well. Be sure you read the instructions on the application and fill it out correctly.
By the way, we are now using some type of biometric passports as of January 2007. I do not know what this entails but there may be a delay. The post office web site will tell you what you need to bring.

If you choose to go to the post office make sure you go to one that issues passports. Not all of them do and I agree with the previous answerers, Mickey Leland building is not a good idea.

the answers with the address of the mickey leeland building are correct. the line there is very long (as i have heard.) i would go to your nearest post office that issues passports. go on line and look for the closest one by typing in your zip code on the us post office website. there is one near me in bellaire, tx that issues passports and you stand in line until it is your turn. very easy. make sure you have 2 passport sized pics of yourself (walgreens, kinko's, etc. can take these) to make things go faster along with all of the necessary paperwork. this information should be posted on the usps website. enjoy your travels!!
