Graves are 6 feet deep normally, unless it a family grave where it will be deeper
The reason is that if they buried a dead person in a grave that is more shallow, then the smell of the decomposing body could be smelled out by wild animals, who would then dig out the body to eat. Which is why you have the saying six foot under. There is other saying which is 'Saved by the bell', also came from when people were buried, there was cases when people had stopped breathing and as medical science between the Roman time at the 18th Centrury was not as good as it is today the person was thought to be dead, so they would be buried alive, a person was then employed to sit at the grave (usally the grave digger) for a week after burial and if the bell rang they had to dig the person up. Hence Saved by the bell!

a grave can be 9 feet deep to take up to 3 burials as land is short..
im most cases you purchase a plot for two people which is then 6 feet..
also by having a grave 9 feet it allows a person to be burried and be with both parents..
it as nothing to do with how a body composes ..
however it does go back to times when peoplw whould bury a body any were and not in a local grave yard and yes to go that depth it whould stop animals from digging them up. also if a person died from a plague or a disease then it was thought that nine or six feet was a safe depth so the disease was not spread

Graves are 6 feet deep. I don't know if this is true but I read somewhere it started after The Plague, that people were buried that deep so that the Plague couldn't spread from the bodies. Like I said though I don't know if its true.

It's 6 feet but anyway it's to stop the ground pushing up the bodies which ultimately would happen if the graves were shallow.

They only go 6ft deep if there is one body being buried, usually it goes deeper to allow for a partner to be buried with the deceased when they pass over
