This seems silly, but I heard the Master Handyman on the radio suggest Tang. Yes, the powdered drink. You first turn on the kitchen faucet to get the hotwater right to the dishwasher. Turn on the dishwasher (empty of course) for 2 minutes. Open and put in the Tang. Close and let the machine run through the entire wash and dry cycle. The citric acid in the drink does a wonderful job cleaning all the surfaces. It works beautifully.

I have had this problem too. I went to wal-mart and around the dishsoap section there is this dishwasher cleaner called jet-dry dishwasher cleaner. Its about $3.00 or so. Just use once a month. It also cleans the calcium deposits from hardwater. Hope this helps :)

I add a little bleach to my dishwasher after it has started the washing cyle, only a little, maybe a tablespoon full. I keeps the inside clean and I don't have any trouble with smells. Resturants are required by the health dept to do this with every load.

You can use white vinegar periodically to help get rid of the residue left behind after several washings. I just pour some in the dispenser with cover, and a little in the bottom of dishwasher. Run the full cycle.

I use vinegar and water, if it is really stained then I use Clorox spray cleaner, and then run the washer to give it a good rinse.
