I twisted my knee, and it's much better but I've found that I'm afraid to use it. Is it all in the mind or is it really a warning?

It is normal, and probably for the best until you know by a doc's assessment that the ligaments are competent to hold it in joint.

Probably a little of both. There are 2 major muscles that go down the thigh to the knee those are the most likely to be tight and sore when applying pressure to them. If they are sore in places check into seeing a massage therapist who will be able to apply enough pressure in the right places to restore full mobility so that you can trust yourself more.
