Personally, I am against homework. School is the teaching and learning arena and such things ought to be contained there. When kids are at home, their time should belong to them and their family. What's the point of a even having a school day with a given number of hours if the purpose of school can't be accomplished within that time frame?

1st through 4th should be no more than an hour.
5th and 6th should be no more than an hour and 30 minutes.
7th and 8th should be no more than two hours.
9th, 10th and 11th and 12th, should be based mostly on long term projects, with nightly homework of no more than 2 hours.

Heck now a days they're giving kids home work in kindergarten!!! And usually it's like 10-15 min per grade so 6th grade would be 60-90 min worth. And so on unless they get a project.

There is no way to measure how much homework, because it differs from teacher to teacher.
