My husband and I want to install a 220V outlet in our utility room to run our dryer. I would like to know, how much it would typically cost to have an electrician install one?

How high is up ?? Should be less than $100 depending on how far from your electrical panel and how difficult to run the wire from the panel to the outlet. Also, cost will vary drastically depending on your geographical area. Check in the yellow pages and most residential contractors will give you a free estimate. If they won't then call someone else. Never just tell someone to do the job without settleing on a price first. To do otherwise is like giving them a blank check. Be sure the electrician is licensed and bonded. This is for your protection as well as his.

Do not do electrical work yourself unless you have the skill of a licensed electrician. If you do it wrong, you could cause damage to your house (fire) that your insurance company could claim was your fault, so they won't pay to fix it. You could also get yourself killed working around electricity. I had a 220-volt line run about 50 feet to an existing service panel in an outbuilding in my back yard. The electricians just tied into an existing 220-volt junction box that originally powered a jacuzzi. But, because they had to run conduit and wiring, plus the hook-up work, it came out to about $400. Typically, a gas dryer is a lot more efficient than an electric dryer and, therefore, is cheaper to operate. For the $400 you'll save by not having the outlet run, you could buy a new gas dryer and save money each month versus running the electric dryer.

it would be based on time and materials. basically how far your utility room is from your distribution panel. get a rough guess of the distance and call a few residential electrical contractors to see what it will cost for where you live. if i was doing it my self it would be around 75 dollars but my utility room is adjacent to my panel. i`m an electrician
