You refer to the London Whitechapel murders, most likely committed by a man the newspapers called, "Jack the Ripper".
Most historian ascribe a total of five prostitutes to him.

Allegedly they were respectively the first and last victims of the self-named Jack the Ripper. Key word being "allegedly" -- Mary Kelly's body was so torn up and destroyed, they could never positively identify her. Also there's the notion that the Ripper didn't stop with her, because there were numerous other bodies of prostitutes found around Whitechapel in 1887-89 that could have been attributed to him, though admittedly Whitechapel back then wasn't exactly the cleanest, safest spot in the world -- anybody could've done those murders.
