windows laptop all the same, but dell is prob the cheapest. if you connect to the net from the dorm you may have to worry about all kinds of viruses you might get on the network if you have a windows laptop. maybe a mac would be a better choice. i would take a look at the macbook.

If money is no object - Macbook is excellent and can do everything you want.
If on a budget, Dell can get you a lot for a little. They tend have the better price with the latest components. You don't need to worry so much about processing power as you do bus size, hard drive size, graphic processing power, amount of RAM, # and type of ports. I own aToshiba Tecra (no annoying touchpad!!), and have an IBM Thinkpad at work that is 100% dependable.
Any of the Windows sellers play "make a deal" towards the end of the month - even more so towards the end of the quarter. They've got to make their sales numbers!! If you call them, the end of the call (especially if you're non-committal) they'll cut price or throw in freebies. If you prefer web shopping, they'll have some kind of deal going - but not as good.

Hi there! Before you buy a laptop, please bear in mind if you are more comfortable with Windows OS or Apple OS. They are both good and very different. I am more of a Windows OS user because of my familiarity with it and ease of use. This is what I'm familiar with. I was given a Mac Mini. It's good but it was very ackward for me. In case it's Windows you can get good brands like Dell, Sony Vaio, HP, Toshiba. Although iBook now can be loaded with Windows & Linux too. Good luck! Hope I help a little!

Get any computer with a good graphic card with at least 256mb. My recomendations are either a nVIDIA Ge FORCE graphic card or a Dimond Stealth ATI Radeon. Also get a computer in which you will be able to upgrade into the new Windows Vista. Also if you want custumize it at http://www.alienware.com/ , also http://www.hp.com/ and other places. Have fun:)
