It depends on what is causing your speed to be so slow. You are limited by your ISP (Internet Service Provider). If the problem is that you are getting a weak signal, that could be fixed by getting a network card with better reception. Sometimes this means getting a network card that comes with an antenna that is large enough to absorb more of the signal.

you'll get virus through only surfing the internet also. it extremely relies upon on the way you grant your self with protection. Arm your pc with a sturdy antivirus ( dont use the free ones) . continually replace and test your equipment many times.
