Depending on your age, you could just say that your parents will not allow you to socialise outside of school hours because of some conflict that you have had. This is very tricky because if it is a good friend they will know your family, siblings , any health issues that are around. all about the other relatives etc. It would be so hard to cover the tracks of a lie. Just go for a short time. drop off the gift and then make your excuses saying that you don't feel well.

Really just tell her you are not in the mood to be around people and you won't be any fun or have a good timebut you will make it up to her with lunch or a present or a girls day out or something. As long as you offer a consolation you should be ok.

If she is your friend and she has invited you to go and you don't want to go, you really don't have to give an explanation, but just tell her the truth that you don't want to go. Don't lie to her, tell her the truth! I am sure you would want to know the truth from a friend right?
That's what friends are suppose to do is be honest and truthful to each other, rather than lying.

If you're really her friend, what would it hurt for you to go to the party for a bit? And if you're really her friend, why come up with a lie? Just tell her you're not up to it, that you hope she has fun and deliver her gift to her over a lunch for just the two of you or on another occassion.

Just say "I'm sorry, I can't make it." You don't need to make an excuse. Certainly don't lie, that will just come back to bite you later. If she asks why not, change the subject.

Do you have a pet? You could call and say that your pet has something extremely wrong (puking all day? bloody diarrhea?) and you had to take it to the vet.
