I had chicken boiling on the stove and I forgot to turn it off before I went to the store. When I came back the house was filled with smoke. How do I get rid of the odor out of the mattresses, walls, clothes, carpet and everywhere else?

You might consider using the product "Fabreeze" on fabrics, and a little trick I learned years ago was to put a disposable pie-plate on the top burner of the stove, and layer it with new coffee grounds. Then turn on the heat under the pie-plate. Often that will do away with other odors. Just keep an eye on the pan while doing this.

Try some baking soda on the mattress and carpet. Leave it for about an hour and then vaccum.

While you are waiting, boil some cinnamon sticks on the stove, but don't go to the store and forget them!

You can make a spray of 3 parts vinegar and 1 part water. Spray items with it that you can not put in the washer, not soaking but, damp. As for things you can, add 1 cup of vinegar to washer and wash without soap, then rewash clothes with soap. may take more than 1 application to totally get rid of the smell. You can also place small bowls of baking soda in closets and in the corners of rooms.

If it’s not winter and/or cold start by opening some windows, next get some Febreeze (sp) and spray the heck out of all soft material (constantly). Lastly, I hate to say it you have to deal with the smell after that for a while.

Dear ocean, Try some well know remedies like placing open pans of ammonia around the house. There is another substance but I can't think right now. I just queried yahoo and they sent me into resolved questions. Some of the stuff they suggested was fancy and unaffordable. But you might want to try yahoo.

Set out shallow dishes with plain vinegar and spray the beds and curtains with Fabreeze.

I agree....Febreze is great...they also make a spray for the air too. But the best thing I have ever used is called 'Odo-Ban'....I got it at Sam's Club. It will take the bad smell out of anything!

Good luck!

Try vacuuming along with some deodorizers. Lighting a scented candle when cooking always kills the scent.
