"Dirt poor" comes from a time when people were so poor they lived in houses that had a dirt floor. "Filthy rich", on the other hand, conjures up an image of someone being covered in dollars as he/she rolls around on the bed and sings "We're In The Money". Everyone knows that money is the filthiest thing there is when it comes to germs.
