My mom lost her books/documentation for her laptop, in her move to AZ, and now it is up to me to help her find info on it so I can fix it? When I turn on the laptop, I can faintly see the desktop, but not good enough to do anything about it? How do you turn up the brightness or why is the screen so dim? She took it into a tech place in Mesa, AZ and asked them the question and they in turn added a bigger stick of RAM and a BIGGER Hard drive. But did nothing to fix the dim screen. RAM and a new HD were NOT needed. But my Mom is 72 and knows nothing about a PC except to chat on line and do email. So she paid the man $300 and took her machine home. Later she finds out that he did nothing to fix the screen. So since I was 1600 miles from her, she boxed it up and put it in the closet. She was majorly scammed. :-( Any help or advice would be appreciated.

Note: Why would she need a 30 GIG HD to chat online and do email ?

Here's a link to a manual http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/ins2600/en/SG/ombk2.pdf

But I believe the way to increase the brightness is to hold down the Fn key and tap the arrow key with the sun icon on it.

I even have had a pair of different Dell Inspiron laptops, that have been very stable. i'm a application engineer (programmer) and so i want a stable computing device with which to do my pastime. i've got not got any genuine adventure with Vista, so i won't be in a position of truly remark there. It feels like the upload-ons (ram, complicated tension, etc.) provided are particularly sufficient, in certainty particularly greater desirable than the present Inspiron that I even have.

I do not own a dell but if I remember correctly it is Fn + arrow
There should be a key labelled Fn, press it together with up arrow to increase brightness, down arrow to decrease. There is still another way also
right click on your desktop
select properties from the menu that appears
the display properties window appears
Click on settings tab in it
Click on advanced button in settings tab
This is the place where you can increase the brightness of the monitor. There may be several tabs. As it is different in different laptops, See if there is a tab called Color, and click on it
You should be able to increase Gamma, brightness, contrast.
Try with different values and see which suits you best. When you are satisfied, you can press apply and then press ok to retain the settings.

first, you don't need a sizable HD to run around the net, I have a 20 GB which is actually like 18GB and i surf the net easy. Te brightness, you would have to look at the little pictures on the keys, and use the function button plus a key to see which runs the contrast. normally it looks like a sun that is half lite. if that doesn't work, then just get a cheap monitor, and connect it to the blue VGA connector on the back, and then she can use the monitor to view what she is doing on the system.
