Wow.
You have the advantage, actually, over the younger students, for two reasons: One, you have more life experience. Two, you care about your future.
Study tips: One, read the section of the textbook the lecture is going to be about BEFORE the lecture. Two, know that if a problem seems really hard, it could be a typo. Three, the best way to learn is to teach.

Good for you!! I just went back to college after 10 years. College is a world away from high school! Just the way classes are conducted are different. You are responsible for remembering when stuff is due, etc. Noone is going to keep reminding you. Organization is KEY!! Keep a day planner and write down EVERYTHING on the appropriate dates. Take advantage of your professors' office hours if you have questions about anything.
You are gonna be nervous, until you get there and all the 18 year old freshmen are walking around clueless, too! The school is prepared to help new students and answer questions. Don't be afraid to ask anything.
Good Luck!! You should be proud of yourself!
(you can email me if you'd like!)

Some Dude is right you have maturity on your side. Structure your time do not fall behind in you reading, take good notes. Most campuses have study skill seminars. If you are going back full time try taking 12 credits your first semester then easing into 15 next semester; if your grant rules and school allow it.
Trust me I have seen some real idiots get college degrees. Just from the way you wrote your question you are very capable.
Get over your past you are no longer that kid.

Good for you! You might want to start with a community college and transfer after completing a two year degree. First of all, it's cheap. Second of all, they have all the resources available to you, tutoring, counseling, events, etc. that you would get at a larger school. You could get all your basics out of the way and transfer or major in one thing at CC and pick a different major for the 4 year school, like maybe business at CC and art at the 4 year...this gives you 2 distinct different degrees to draw on when you are looking for a job.

You may have to get your GED first, so that you have a H.S. diploma. Then look at the kind of school you want to go to and apply. You may have to take a SAT test, but there are classes you can got to for that if you need to take that test. Also, you can apply for financial aide or a student loan if you need it.
I went to college about 23 years after graduating high school and got an associate degree. State colleges are cheaper if you live in that state where the college is located.
GOOD LUCK!

Congratulations....You've got balls gurl....I did the same thing. You will get a grant as long as you are in school. File for financial aid and check and see what other assistanca they have available at your school. A counselor will help you with an education plan so that you don't end up taking some BS you dont like. Check it over because they can make mistakes that will slow down the process and push forward your grad date. You will be just fine. It takes guts to step back into the game....Go head and get your skool girl on!

college is not like high school. You will be choosing your own curriculum (for the most part). If you are failing a class you can drop it before it messes up your GPA. You can cheat your way through if you must.
My advice is make lots of friends (some will go on to be in high places). Study hard, but not too hard. And major in something you like not in what you think will get you a good job.

I am very impressed and proud of you!! It is a little intimidating, especially when you haven't been there before but if you set your mind on your goals, you can achieve anything!! Don't ever be afraid to ask your instructors for extra help if you need it, that's what they are there for. Most colleges also have tutoring help available at little or no cost, so take advantage of that, too, if you need it. And use your counselor to help with your class schedules and credits needed. Good luck!!!

Chill, first of all college isn't that hard, you just have to know no one but you and your family will care if you go or not. The professors don't care most of the time if you show up for class. Take notes as well as you can, possibly record the lectures if you don't think you'll do well and sit in the front of the class so you can see what the professor is writing

First of all, be sure to review your spelling! With spell check on every computer, there is never an excuse for bad spelling! Start getting used to it and leave the text messaging dictionary at home...(skerd!!!) Best advice that i would have is to get to know your professors. Hopefully you are going to a school where the class sizes aren't huge. After the first class, go up to the professor and introduced yourself. Be honest with them, tell them you are very nervous about how you'll do but want to give it 100%. Ask THEM what you can do for their particular class to stay on top of the subject matter. Just make sure you stand out to them, and keep asking them questions, showing you really want to learn. They may tell you about study groups, free tutoring, even one-on-one office hours where you meet them in their office occasionally and review the subject matter and ask any questions you have. I don't know your situation, but if your grant is sufficient enough, try really hard to NOT have a job while going to class...if you aren't a stellar student, working can really be a distraction from homework, etc. Good luck! and Congrats!
