How do I find a generalization for all whole numbers that cannot be written as a difference of two squares?

Ah, I'm really confused on this one; i dont get it at all. i need an explanation... i know a squared +b squared= (a-b)(a+b)... but I dont get that either. plz help!

(a-b) (a+b) = a^2 + ab -ba - b^2 = a^2 -b^2 .
