how does an infrared heater such as a dr100 detroit radiant (rev-erber-ray) work? I am having burner problems

The typical electrical infrared heater has coils through which electricity flows, a fan to distribute heat, a thermostat, an on-off switch and a tilt switch to turn it off if it is upset. There may be also, an overheat safety switch.

If this is a gas heater, substitute a heat exchanger for the coils.

You might learn something useful from the owner's manual. If you don't have one, go to their website. You should find one there, or info as to how to get one.
