The fellowship of the Rings is only the first section in the book The Lord of the Rings...it was published as a "book" because the first publisher thought the whole story was too long for one volume. The story is about a ring (found by Bilbo in the Hobit) and it's journey to be destroyed. There is also a love story, a story about a man destined to become a king and doesn't want to be, the history of man & elves. It is a many layered book that is worth reading again and again. As are the movies worth viewing over and over although I do recommend the extended virsions. If you view the movies keep in mind that some things are moved around a bit...from book to movie. There are a number of things that are in one section of the book and turn up in another section of the movies...the placement of the move is important to the movies for flow and explaination of things...but they are in the wrong spot if you read the book. I hope you take the time to enjoy both.

Tied up the last questions from the Hobbit. Set the pace for the start of the trek to destroy the One ring of power in Mt. Doom. Drew the characters together and proceeded to weave their relationships into the foundation for the remaining series. Frodo inherits the ring, goes to find the elves and gets pursued by the Dark Lord's ring-wraiths, joins the companions and ultimately sets off on the task only aided by his friend Sam Gamgee

Why don't you read it? Different people have different ideas of what the plot of a book is. Make up your own.
