This should totally be up to the woman to choose what she wants to do but for me it was an honor to take on my husbands last name and I carry it with pride!!!! I love it... I feel it is part of honoring him as my husband and i carry it because i want to and because i love him...

It's just tradition. A woman doesn't have to change her name to her husband's last name. And like you said, some women want to keep their individuality and hyphenate their maiden name and their new married name. It's just personal choice.

It's really a preference nowadays. If a woman is successful and her name is well known, she may not take her husband's last name and just keep her own. Others add a hyphen, and in some cultures you add a last name each generation. This is where the "Chikita Bonita Serita blah blah blah blah" names that go on and on and on come from.

Because we live in a patriarchal society. Women change their names because when getting married they become part of the man's family and the children are then decendents of the male family more than the female side. Why? Well traditionally, women couldn't take care of themselves or provide for their families. Infact, women were just baby making home making house pets. Some women still chose to live like this. Many do not.
These days, women don't have to change. Sometimes men change their names for the woman's family name, but many women still feel like they should change their names because of our patriachial traditions.

We don't have to. It's not the law. It's just tradition. Some people are really into tradition, and some are not. There are many reasons to keep, or change your name when you get married. A man has the same choice to take the woman's name if he wants also.

You dont have to. But as they said, it is a TIME honoured tradition, I think the man is a whipped -wuss if he takes her last name. Does this make HER the MR. and HE the MRS.? I agree in equality and all that,. a modern woman can do what ever she wishes.
