Sorry for being ambiguous. Ok, I live in an apartment. I have an ethernet port in my room that gives me internet access. I want to attach a router to that port and share that access with all my desktop and laptop. I used to be able to do this, but now they've intentionally done something to the network so now my router won't get a connection to the internet. Is there anything in the router that I can configure that will get around this? Like making the router look like my laptop to the network?

Probably what is happening is that the provider giving service to your apartment is only permitting specific MAC addresses to connect.

The MAC address is a hardware address that would be specific to the machine connected to the port. If your laptop works when directly connected, but your router doesn't, check the documentation for your router and look for something like "MAC address clone". Activating this feature should make the router use the same MAC address on it's uplink port as your laptop is using.

if your connecting this router is not against the apartment rules, i suggest just asking the people in charge for help...that would be the easiest way to deal
