My guess would be that Tom Welling didn't take the role in the new movie to avoid being typecasted as the character of "Superman." Actually, I think Brandon Routh was a pretty good Superman but the movie itself... not so much. Bryan Singer didn't do a very good job, the story was weak and the viewers were left with a lot of unanswered questions. If you didn't like the movie, it was because of the story, not because of the actor.

I thought that Routh was kind of dull. He did a decent job, but I was screaming during the movie for him to show one believable emotion. It may have been the script or the director, but I think it was mainly Routh.
Reeves was always larger than life when playing Superman (and adorable as Clark).
Welling is very good on Smallville. He makes me like his character as a person, not just as a larger-than-life figure (like Reeves did).
I am excited to see the sequel though.

i imagine they must have ether gotten the guy from Smallville, the WB practice. he's a sturdy actor. OR James Caviezel must have performed superman. James advised the director that he needed to be interior the action picture in spite of the undeniable fact that the director refused because he theory James change into too wide-spread for the area.(from playing interior the interest of the Christ) those are basically a number of my ideas. Tom Cruise, Nick Lachey, Tom Cruse and Brad Pitt are negative alternatives for this area. exceptionally Nick Lachey. some might want to correctly be staggering actors yet basically are not top for this area. Chuck Norris can not be interior the action picture. it really is a movie about him.

I thought Brandon Routh looked eerily similar to Christopher Reeve at times. Having grown up watching all of those Superman movies, I was pleasantly surprised to see that this film was clearly acknowledging them through the score. I did think it looked like they had a lot of makeup on Routh-he looked almost plastene like an action figure...strange

Brandon Routh was pretty good...the movie itself was a bit lacking in areas but I still enjoyed it. I believe Tom Welling didn't do it because they are trying to keep the WB series Smallville seperate from the actual films......

I don't watch smallville...so I am glad whatsis name did not show up
on the big screen.
Brandon as Supebaby...creeped me out. I believed I was looking at an alien. No doubt about it. That boy don't look like he was born on planet earth. Excellent performance. and it fully helped me understand what that conversation was about where David Carradine is talking about Superman to Uma Thurman...towards the end of Kill Bill.
I have to agree with Tarantino's assessment. Watching him playing peeping tom at Lois' house...and watching him bask in the adulation at the stadium after he exits the plane full of people he has just saved...made it clear to me...how very little he respects human beings...and what their role is as narcissistic supply. Brandon nails the performance...in that regard.
And I really dug his soaking up the sun to withstand the kryptonite...a la Dark Knight Returns...good stuff.

Routh did a good job.
I'm really glad they (the studios) decided NOT to cast Nic Cage like they had originally wanted to for the role of Supes. YIKES! That would have been just as bad as Michael Keaton as Batman.

I agree with you about Tom. Honestly, I didn't like the actor they chose. Infact, I was very disappointed with the film.

I liked Brandon just fine. If you prefer someone who's closer to the larger-than-life model, check out the link below!
