Do not bother to even use an old car or truck; build your whole frame and roll cage assembly out of tubular steel. In building your frame you would need to consider the weight distribution, mounts for the engine and drive train (with transmission), steering assembly, front suspension and wheels, rear axle and wheels. Many places that need attaching points could be made with rectangular tubing (1 1/2 x 3 or 2 x 4), the rest with round, tubing (1 7/8 diameter typically). The frame will be strong and of a reasonable weight and not have the pitfalls of trying to piece something together with an old, stripped vehicle.

Find a junkyard, offer to work there for parts, after a month of work, ask for that old truck over there, or that old car. Look for a Single Frame or Mono Frame from the 60s. The Mopars and other heavy metal cars of the 50s-60s had some decent Mono Frame vehicles with some awesome power plants.
You have begun.

'92 Buick Lesabre was my first car. Definitely a grandma car, but really awesome at the same time. Older Buick's are built to last, they're a blast to drive, plus cops usually don't give you a second glance. I would without a doubt go with the Buick. Just make sure you have a good idea of how huge it is when parking. Edit- They're also really comfortable! And great if you find yourself needing to sleep in the car. Plus, depending on how old it is, there could be up to 6 ashtrays in that *****.

What is your objective....race car, off road rock climber, sand rail?
I'd find an old Jeep that runs but is maybe rusted out. You can easily strip all the fenders, etc off. Suspension lifts and upgrades are readily available, as are engine upgrades and performance kits, etc.

vw bugs were always very popular for what you are referring to...in essence a dune buggy.they're not as cheap as they used to be...you might try to find an old chevy chevette...basically you will want a rear wheel drive car.if you know how to weld you can piece together your own "mad-max" creation...it is a lot of fun...cheers!be careful ie;helmet, five point harness,etc...the extra cost is worth the extra fun of not going to the hospital.

Why not just get a golf cart? Then you don't have windows and doors to take off.
