In the majority of cases (I believe that it is well over 70%), people who commit suicide are suffering from major depression.

Female are more likely to attempt suicide, but males tend to "succeed" at a higher rate. Men usually choose more lethal methods (like using a gun) than women. Women tend to overdose on medication which is less likely to be fatal and also gives them more time for someone to come and find them in time to get help.

I just wanted to respond to one of the posts here:

The highest suicide rates are NOT in fact among males 16-32

There are in senior populations accross both genders. As a matter of fact suicide rate increases in a fairly linear model with age despite common misconceptions.

Utter hopelessness, Males between 16 and 32 are most at risk.

South Africa suicide stats. one death by suicide every 26 mins. Shocker!
