I love that book, too. If you haven't yet, read "Gathering Blue" and "Messenger" which are pseudo-sequels to "The Giver."

I'd also recommend "The City of Ember" by Jeanne DuPrau along with the sequel "The People of Sparks." There's a third book as well, a prequel, but I can't remember the title off the top of my head.

I'm not sure what other kinds of books you might like based on just that one, but I really like "Speak" by Laurie Halse Anderson and "Gifts" by Ursula K. Le Guin.

Loved the book and the author. She has also written "Gathering Blue" " Messenger" and "Gossamer" which are all the kind of semi fantasy and reality mix of "The Giver."

She has also written "Number the Stars" which is about Denmark and the Holocaust. Also a great read.
