Plenty of times. It has its advantages
You get to the station fast for the roads are much less congested.
The platforms are relatively less crowded.
Finding a seat or berth is easy for the passengers will normally be fast asleep and there is no up and down movement.
One rider though - midnight travel can get boring if you are travelling all by yourself.
You didn't mention which route you want to take?

No, but I took the scenic Los Angeles - San Francisco Pacific Coast train on a sunshiny day!
Gorgeous trip near the seaside, every two seconds a new picture postcard view!
Highly recommended!
