omg. so i have 16 pages of math homework due tomarrow and yeah like always i put off till the last second..anyone know how to find the coordinates of the midpoint of the segment whose end points are (-4, -9) and (7, -5)? is someone could like type out the steps or anythiing for me that would be greatly apreciated so that i could do the rest of this..

It's the average of -4 and 7, and the average of -9 and -5 with parentheses around them.

k.. find the midpoint of -4 and 7 first (disregarding the other axis for now) which is +1.5 , because the whole span is 11, then divide by 2, which is 5.5: so you could either subtract 5.5 from the 7 OR add 5.5 to the -4: either way it's the midpoint of the 'x' axis.
Then, do the same for the 'Y' axis:
find the midpoint of -9 and -5 ..the difference is 4, and 1/2 of that is 2. So the answer there is -7 for the 'y'.
put the numbers between your anwer's brackets in the correct order (x,y) therefore the answer in this case is: (1.5,-7)

The formula for midpoint is (X1 + X2) divided by 2 and (Y1 + Y2) divided by 2.

Example: (-4 + 7) divided by 2 equals 1.5. That's your X value. In co-ordinate geometry, the first number of the segment is always X.

(-9 + -5) divided by 2 equals -7. That's your Y value.

Answer would therefore be (1.5 , -7)

Finding a midpoint is like finding the halfway point between two points.

Your first point is 4 to the left, (-4), and your second point is 7 to the right, (7). What's halfway in between? Find the average: (-4+7)/2 = 1.5

Your first point is 9 down (-9), and your second point is 5 down (-5). What's halfway in between? Find the average (-9 + -5)/2 = -7.

Therefore, the answer is (1.5, -7)

An easy way to set it up is like this.

Step 1: Add 'em up.
x y
(-4, -9)
+( 7, -5)
----------------
3 -14

Step 2: Cut 'em in half.

3/2 = 1.5 -14/2 = -7

Therefore (1.5, -7)

To find the midpoint you need to use the formula: X1-X2 divided by 2,and Y1-Y2 divided by 2.... Therefore, -4 - 7= -11/2 which equals -5.5,then, -9 - (-5)= -4/2 which is -2...Hence,the answer is -5.5,-2 which is the midpoint...

The coordinates are halfway between the coordinates of the end points... Consider the x's, -4 and 7. Halfway between these is x = 1.5. Now consider the y's, Halfway between -9 and -5 is -7. So the answer is (1.5, -7)

i usually write it out. like to find the midpoint of x i write -4 -3 -2 -1 0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7and cross out ((answer for x is -5.5 cuz its in the middle)
try doing it for y now

-9 -8 -7 -6 -5 ---> -7

so (1.5,-7)


btw-there is a formula but seriously-who wants to memorize a formula =]

The midpoint formula is (x1 + x2) /2 , (y1 + y2) /2

So that would be: ( -4 + 7) /2 and (-9 + -5) /2

The answer is (1.5, 7)

so use mide point formula (x1 + y1/2, x2 + y2 / 2)
(-4 +7/2, -9 +(-5) ) /2
( 3/2 , -14/2) ( here -9 + (-5) = -9 - 5= -14 )
(3/2 , -7) this is a mid points of given ends point

Simiple....

(X1 + X2)/2 , (Y1 + Y2)/ 2

So.....

(-4 + 7)/2 , (-9 -5)/2
