Wow, talk about beating the odds. She was born into poverty and segregation , and had polio as a child, told that she may never walk again without supports. There is a video about her; I believe it's called "Wilma." I saw it many years ago ; very inspirational. Check the web site below. Be careful of plagiarism, your teacher has a computer too!

In the Rome 1960 games, it was Wilma Rudolph and Cassius Clay (later Muhammad Ali). She dominated her track events with her graceful but blinding speed. She also won over the Italians with her grace and charm.

1960 gold medalist in Rome Italy. 100 meter 200 meter and 400 meter sprint relay. As a child suffered from one leg shorter than the other. Born and raised in Clarksville Tennessee. I believe she attended Alabama A&M. The Italian press called her "The Gazelle". She was the darling of those Games. Beautiful Black woman. A true American athletic icon.
