female guppies often have a swollen appearance even if they are not pregnant. Also, they are live bearers and do not lay eggs.

Female guppies store sperm, using one insemination to fertilize several batches of fry. If she has com In contact with any male in the last month or so, then she is pregnant. Also, most fancy female guppies that are sold are not sent to pet stores by the fish farms until they have dropped a batch or two of fry. It is more unlikely that they are not pregnant.

In order to tell when the female is ready to give birth, look at the clear area near her anal vent. If it is dark in color, then she will birth in about two weeks or less. However, a female can hold the batch longer if conditions are not right, and she can delay fertilization if conditions are not right. There is no set time frame for guppies, just a general ldea. With good water quality, lots of space to hide, and the right temperature and light, spawning will happen every four weeks or so.

Fish are funny you know. They are a living thing & as my local pet shop guy said "They are just like pregnant women, moody etc and they can sometimes take months to give birth" LOL I have to agree. Even though i'm new to this i also have 3 female pregnant guppies and one who is closest to giving birth is being very difficult.

The female guppy is just trying to protect her babies that are soon to arrive. Put each guppy into separate tanks until the eggs are laid. But to hatch they need to be fertilized by a male guppy.
