I did Orajel first and then Motrin since it lasts longer than Tylenol. Of course, accompanied by lots of TLC. Sometimes I offered a frozen washcloth, but my kids didn't really chew on them. Never heard of teething tablets (kids 2 1/2 and 5).

I was nursing my son when I was using Orajel and it made him so mad he wouldn't eat! He would turn his head from me and scream. From that point on I only used Tylenol. If it was really bothering him or he was really in discomfort I gave him a baby toothbrush.

He could hold it and soothe his own gums. He never liked the teething rings or any of that. Although, I have noticed him with a cheapy ring ($1) from Target. But, by far the toothbrush always works for sore gums!

Our pediatrician said to use Motrin (lasts longer, better pain killer) and to use cold things that are good to chew.

She said that all that stuff like Orajel just washes off. It doesn't last long in terms of managing pain, and it can really upset their tummies.

And she doesn't have anything good to say about teething tablets, either.

But a cold, wet washcloth is good. Or a frozen bagel. Or cold carrot nubs, if the teeth haven't popped through yet...

Teething tablet never did diddly for my kids. With orajel you run the risk of your baby being allergic to it, very strange stuff that topical numbing agent.

Tylenol in the right dose, every 4 hours staggered with Advil every 6 hours is THE best thing I found for my kids. Do both, it's the best way to keep aches and pains away and keeps the baby comfy. The Advil line of medicines has one for babies 6 to 23 months.

There are these awesome things that you can put frozen fruit or ice cubes into, mesh baggie pacifier kind of thing, and your baby can get the benefit of the cold goodies. Munchkin fresh food feeder is what it's called. For sale at walmart and babies r us, I always bought them 2 at a time. Take a look at it here: http://www.drugstore.com/products/prod.asp?pid=95236&catid=26964&trx=PLST-0-SEARCH&trxp1=26964&trxp2=95236&trxp3=1&trxp4=0&btrx=BUY-PLST-0-SEARCH

My youngest started teething at 3 months had four teeth by 8 months! And he never got one at a time, he did them in pairs and was miserable without tylenol, advil and frozen fruits to suck on.

best of luck to you mom!

Orajel overnight, it has 3% more numbing agent than the regular.
