In my opinion, collecting means you want to have them for your own...investing means you collect them long enough to make a profit on them and then get rid of them when there is a profit.

The difference would be, if you were collecting rare coins, you would be collecting them for their place in history, the stories behind the money, the history of the time period of the money.

To invest in rare coins, the only thought is how many others are there, and what will be the probable rate of appreciation on this one

Well, whether you are looking to sell them or not!!!

If you get coins to increase value it is investment. If you do it because you want to get that coin you really want, it is collecting.

If you are collecting, you enjoy coins. If you are investing you are mostly looking for profit.

You cannot invest in rare coins.

We now have ETFs.
