Why are they doing this when it seems obvious it will cost many Americans their jobs and many southern states will suffer?

Because the companies will make more money since they don't have to pay for health care and a decent wage. Basically the same reason they have sweatshops in China.

To do the jobs which needs to be done close by for faster turnaround. These jobs can't be shipped overseas. But in order to get cheap labor, the businesses need the border vanished or the illegals assimilated.
