Balsa wood--it has been used in models for years. It is cheap, light weight, easy to work with, gives that real wood look, readily available at home improvement stores/hobby houses, etc...

You could rout out a thin plank into a pattern to resemble shingles, or use decorative paper over foam core to resemble shingles or clay roofs.
Also, you could get a small square of tin and mold it over what ever you can find around the house to create that aluminum roof look, and then spray paint in one of the popular aluminum roof colors. (Be sure to wear protective gloves if you do this)
You could always paint sandpaper. When painted, depending on the size grit , can look like tar paper.
If you have access to small pine cones, you can tear them apart. The individual seeds, once glued to a base, can also look like crude shingles.

The possibilities are endless, just look around, and try to utilize materials that you have available.

Good Luck!!!

how about Foam Core board (almost like a shiny poster board with a foam inside).... or balsa wood which is easy to work with & would give you an authentic wood texture you could use wood stain on.

There are many "Scrapbooking papers" that would give you nice textures for a quick roof. Or you can literally use something like sandpaper to recreate a tar-paper roof or exposed corrigated cardboard to simulate the southwestern style tiles. Use a drybrush (paintbrush with almost ALL the paint removed) to give some depth & reality to the cardboard.

Look with new eyes & see how you can recreate the textures you want. Be creative!

Check your local craft stores for miniature items to create your scale! Depending upon the direction you want to go... architectural renderings or a dollhouse type house - I included a link for dollhouse miniatures (because you said you wanted realism). Have fun!

To an volume... it could count on the size !! I construct many a million/35 armor dioramas... and for this i take advantage of poured plaster for brick or stone (placing molds out of Bass-wood), and likewise a million/8th inch thick plywood. I additionally carve bricks into the plaster with an axe and scribing device... and if I opt to repeat the construction, i take advantage of commercial molding-rubber. On my N-scale type railroad (and HO golf equipment I artwork with) i take advantage of sheet Balsa or sheet styrene plastic. verify around for a type Railroading save... they have styrene plastic in molded bricks, clapboard, and such... in addition they have scale I-beams, L-beams, and H-beams. solid success !!
