The socks should match the pants, so a khaki/tan-colored sock would look nice. The same color pant and sock elongates the leg and makes the outfit match better.
Also, if there's a hint of any other color in the shirt, jacket, etc., (say green), a sock with a small print with the khaki/tan and a bit of green would be nice.
Last but not least, make sure the shoes are polished or brushed, without scuffs!

I think medium/light brown socks would look best, but you could get away with anything from khaki to a brown a little darker than the shoes.

Dont listen to anyone else.
Socks should match your pants. So when your pant leg goes up their is constitancy and your eye doesnt go right for the miss matched colour. If your socks and pants math then you can just co-ordinate the colour of shoe with it so its doesn't have to match. Shoes come in way to many different colour and mens pants don't so its easier to just have...black, beige, dark green, grey and navy socks.
If you decide to wear white pants (only acceptable in summer) you should wear them with dressy sandals so you dont need socks. White socks just look tacky and i cant stand them. You don't want to have this dark brown foot and ankle with khaki pants it will look wierd so stick to matching the pants.

Absolutely NOT white - white socks with tan pants and dark shoes looks tacky as hell. Not to mention that if your feet get wet, the color of the shoes will bleed onto your socks...
Match the socks to the shoes.

I also have a depressing brown pair of leather-based gay Giano shoes i picked up at a thrift save for like 12 greenbacks. I oftentimes rock them with a pair of denims(darkish or gentle blue no rely) with a protracted sleeve(gown) shirt, un-tucked with a tie. So rather almost any jean will pass with, besides as khaki and/or earthy tones. attempt to stray faraway from black nevertheless, particularly if the shoes are darkish brown.

Neutral colors are best; white, tan or beige.
It also depends on what kind of shoes you're wearing. Khaki pants seem casual and if your shoes are slip-on boat shoe-type, wear au naturel...otherwise known as barefoot but make sure you insert Dr. Scholl's so your feet don't sweat or smell.
