The cause of death was never determined, however, he probably was dropped when the kidnapper was crawling down the ladder. The body was seriously decomposed when found. Hauptmann was executed for the crime, but he may not have been the kidnapper.

Hauptmann was certainly involved. He was in possession of the ransom money, which was hidden in a garage, with an alarm system rigged to a bell near his bed to alert him if anyone but himself tampered with the money.

I thought his son died from blunt force trauma and it was questionable whether Bruno Hauptmaan was really the killer.

He didn't use a gun and the child's death may have been accidental.
