How did the actions of the Germans on their move to enter France affect the local population?

Good question. Actually, the combat troops behaved well. There are countless accounts of locals being surprised by the politeness, and willingness to pay, of the occupation Wehrmacht troops. Personally, on my visits to France, I heard this over and over again from people who were alive during the occupation. This experience was in large responsible for the quiet collaboration of the VAST majority of French citizens. The famed, and largely mythical in historical fact, "French Underground" did not get underway until 1942 (when Vichy France was occupied by the Germans). Even then, it was primarily organized by the Communists, who were used to being covert and frankly were planning for this type of "people's war".
As the war started to turn against Germany, in early 1943, increased appropriations, and forced labor, moved people away from passive collaboration to passive resistance.
The Maquis, again their exploits largely mythical, didn't come into being until after the June 6 landing. They did, to their credit, provide considerable assistance to landing troops in Operation Dragoon in August 1944. This was the landing in Southern France.
Having said all this, the SS and Gestapo were hated, and deservedly so. Also, there WERE folks who risked their own and their family's lives to aid the Allies. But, one must also realize that they were in the extreme minority.

Many people left, many people went into hiding, there were tons of "War Brides" that came home with American GI's.
