What all does a Sharif do?

i have to write a sentence to show that i know what a sharif is but i don't have enough information on them.

so could sombody tell me what it is they do/ what is their role in society. what do they do on a daily basis/ what responsibilities do they have as Sharif?

this is the deffinition i got from Encarta:
