In the fair tax you only pay a 1% tax on all purchases of new items. You also get a check every month from the government that covers all the taxes you would on things up to the poverty line, which means, in the end, only luxurys are taxed.

From what I understand the Fair tax is a national sales tax on new goods and services. Liberals hate the fair tax because it does not punish those who make more income. Moreover it would benefit most the middle class which neither party respresents. I don't think it has a prayers chance of passing as one would only be taxed on what they spent. Remember that politicians are interested in only 4 things
1-Money
2-Power
3-Themselves
4- More of the other three

To expect them to do what is right or fair is like asking the israeli's and the arab's to play nice and get along. It ain't gonna happen.

It sounds good on paper, but
1-Executives will negotiate perks to avoid paying the tax: I want a Lear jet, the company buys it 'for the business' [tax exempt], and gives it to me, or sells it to me for $1 [it's used, so no tax]. I'm sure a savvy salesperson can locate a 'used' yacht for me and still make a healthy sales commission [while the govt gets nothing]. I see potential for big ticket items to go untaxed, while, again, the middle class is squeezed.
2-Won't it just increase internet sales and side-line/street corner 'hot deals on a new watch'--depriving the gov't of revenue?
3-How will Mr.Middle Income Wage-Earner afford a new car? On a $22,000 car, Mr.MIWE pays $6600 in FAIR taxes, and needs the warranty to avoid nasty repair bills that Mr.Millionaire can easily afford by buying a 'used' Mercedes.
4-I'm naturally leery of such a huge change in taxes...those in power will see this as a great way to keep BOTH the old and new systems.

you preserve one hundred% of your paycheck till you pass to purchase something, then you definitely pay a dazzling purchase greater advantageous than you're paying now for a similar merchandise. And confident i've got appeared on the information superhighway website and study N. I am for some kind of new tax system, but would this just cause people not to purchase some items they would normally have purchased? I would have to see more plans. I do not see this as a fair tax.

Do you mean the "flat tax"? That will benefit you if you are rich, otherwise if not rich you will likely be paying more. And it will not eliminate IRS as some claim. Think about it someone as to keep the books as to how much tax is due and someone will always look for ways to cheat on that, and someone still has to write a check for the taxes to the IRS and someone will always not send in that check for one of millions of reasons. Is the IRS screwing you now? yes. If laws are changed will IRS still be screwing you? very likely yes.

How fair is "fair tax"? I already pay more than most people percentage wise. how much more do you want from me? I have worked hard and I take good care of myself and do not make any demands on the government to do ANYthing for me and never have. I think a flat tax, excluding people under a certain amount of income would be MORE fair and much more productive. All people who want Socialism should leave the U.S.A.

you mean the tax where we get to play, let's buy everything used so we're not taxed? it's got too many loopholes.

seriously... have you thought about this? how will the fed budget when no one can predict how many luxury purchases there will be? i used to sell fine jewelry and rich people are really good at figuring how to get breaks by sending things out of state or paying nearly all cash. it is completely unrealistic. why would anyone buy luxury goods here at all anymore if we did that? the rich can travel overseas anyway and get better deals on lots of items. why would this work?
