because steering wheel hubs are an interference fit, ie the tapered shaft gets bigger than the diameter of the hole in the steering wheel, the two surfaces tend to grow together, simply rock the wheel from top to bottom and side to side, gently at first and gradually increasing the effort, a spray of wd40 or similar wont hurt, and you will feel the wheel loosening and then it will come off in your hands. dont get too carried away that you might damage something, but just keep rocking the wheel

It is on a taper. You can damage the steering wheel if you don't know what you are doing.
If you want to have a go try this.
1. Put the nut back on the shaft. (this stops the wheel hitting you in the face)but don't tighten it down tight.
2. Make sure the wheel is straight ahead so you put it back on straight.
3. Sit in the drivers seat and with both feet firmly on the firewall and both hands near the spokes of the wheel pull hard rocking the wheel from side to side until it pops up.
4. Now remove the nut and remove the wheel.
Modern cars have airbags and collapsible steering columns, do not ever hit the top of the shaft with a hammer as you will break the pin that prevents the shaft collapsing while you are driving and you will need a new column

Well, the most dangerous part of a car is the nut holding the wheel..... *ba-dump, crash*
Seriously, the wheel is pressed onto the steering column. You will need a steering wheel puller from your local auto parts place.

put the bolt back on three or four threads, have a buddy strike the bolt on its head while you sit in the seat and pull the steering wheel toward you. the bolt will keep it from flying off and hitting you. do not hit the bolt head with too much force or you will damage the head.easiest way to remve one, no special ytoolsneede

You need a steering wheel puller to pull the hub away from the tapered spline.

Which location? The middle of the steering wheel? That one is only for the horn mechanism.
