Has anyone encountered trying to get out of a non compete agreement at work? I have always heard that they are basically non enforceable...but mine reads pretty iron clad tight. Can a company really prevent you from working in an industry that your entire career has been based on?

Companies rarely enforce non-competes because it's not worth the cost. If you're going into another field, how will they even know you're still in sales?

There has been some recent case law that has stated that a company cannot prevent someone from earning a living at his/her trade by virtue of a non-compete. So most of them fall flat.

If you're really worried, I would advise checking with an employment lawyer in your state. But I would also advise if you leave your current employer - just don't tell them where you are going :-)

Yes, however most companies don't bother. If you are leaving, don't tell where you are going. Period. I have signed so many of those but really unless you are directly costing the company money and they it is because of you (I mean a lot of money) they won't bother.
