The "Trail of Tears" refers to a low point in U.S. history. The white settlers wanted the lands held by the various Indian tribes in the Southeastern U.S. They talked the government into removing the Indian tribes. Some of the Cherokee people retreated into the wilds of the Smoky Mts. and some of the Seminoles retreated into the wilds of the Okifanokee swamp in Florida. However the majority of these two tribes and the Creek indians of Georgia were forced to walk from their homes, in the dead of winter, to what is now Oklahoma. Many of the old people, children and the sick died during the trek. Nearly half of the people who started died on the way. They were promised, by the government, that Oklahoma would forever be theirs. It was, until whites convinced the government to open it up for settlement. Then the Indians were confined to small reservations and the rest of Oklahoma was opened up to homesteading. Years ago Johnny Cash had an album called Bitter Tears. One of the songs on the album was So Long As The Grass Shall Grow which was one of the promises the government gave for how long Oklahoma would belong to the Indians. Some of their other verbiage was, 'so long as the Sun shall shine' and 'so long as the rivers shall flow'. Those conditions still prevail but the Indians don't own Oklahoma. The Trail of Tears is a blot on our history but it is not the only case of bad treatment of the Indians. We deplore genocide and ethnic cleansing by other countries but that is exactly what our country practiced against the Native Americans.

The Trail of Tears was basically the governments way of controlling, and moderating the Cherokee population by purposely marching them during the winter. You can thank your great nation for this and many other lovely atrocities committed.
You should also check out info on Indian Re-education camps, killing off the buffalo, and diseased (smallpox and such) blankets given to Natives.
And this is just a couple of reasons American Patriots are idiots. As was, still is!
Oh, did you know Hitler designed the way the Nazi party dealt with the Jews because he was inspired by the way America dealt with its Natives?
If you hate the truth, hate yourself. If you embrace it, think of the butterflies!

I believe it is a trail that the native Americans took when they were forced from their homes in the northeastern part of the U.S. to the mid-west. Many died, their for the name "Trail of Tears".

I believe it was the description of the forced march by the US government of the Cherokee Nation being forced for their ancestral homes in Florida to Oklahoma. More than three thousand of them died on the way.
