First just FYI, the discovery seat was never actually recalled. I saw that article too and was concerned as at the time our son was usign one. In fact consumer reports withdrew their remarks urging for the recall. It was found that they did their testing all messed up.
Second, the Discovery is the smallest infant seat that we found but Im not sure if we tried the other one you are looking for. We have a tiny, compact car too and had troubles finding one that fit in it.
Good Luck! And congratulations on your new baby!

We just bought a Safety 1st Starter car seat and it adjusts to fit the car seat. It's pretty nice. I have never used the Graco Safe Seat Step 1 but I know that Toys R Us and Babies R Us sell Graco products, and some of the staff there can be really helpful (some of them).

I also have a Graco Snugride. I love it! It fit well in my car (Focus). I had a Graco with my last child too. We never had any problems with them. We got ours at Target, and it was reasonably priced.
Hope this helps!

I have the Graco snugride, it is great, and also did well on the consumer reports car seat testing.

in case you may purely arise with the money for one automobile seat and don't plan to have yet another new child interior the subsequent couple of years, then get a convertible. in case you do plan to have yet another new child, you certainly might desire to justify the value of the toddler seat. remember, those issues are no longer any solid after 5 or 6 years, so must be thrown out besides. you will get greater mileage to you cash with a convertible. in case you employ a sling, you do no longer choose the provider (which hurts your back besides). in case you do no longer plan to spend lots time in department shops, the provider/cart gadget is purely no longer well worth the money the two. you would be greater powerful off with purely a common stroller (returned, the seat could must be thrown away at last). a large number of ladies use purely convertibles and not in any respect get the toddler provider, so do no longer rigidity approximately it. toddler will in wonderful condition wonderful. If it did no longer help her, they could no longer record it as solid from 5 kilos. i could upload that i did no longer discover it from now on durable to adhere the toddler into the automobile seat interior the automobile vs. sticking toddler into automobile seat and then right into a base interior the automobile. although, i've got not got an SUV the two. that would complicate issues in case you ought to climb out and in. yet another benefit of the toddler seat is in the experience that your toddler has reflux or a chilly, they breathe greater powerful if left to sleep of their carseat (strapped in, of direction). can not do this with the convertible because of the fact it is put in interior the automobile. This concern does not impact maximum toddlers, although.

The infant car seats today are huge!!! They are all to big for compact vehicles. If you have 4 doors on your vehicle, I would recommend getting a convertible carseat... one you can use from now until they're 80-100 pounds.

Congrats on your little one.
