~Now why are you asking me this instead of your teacher? As a technical matter of logic, handing in a blank page would suffice, zero words being less than 500.

Maybe the 500 was intended as a maximum and you are expected to write a thoughtful, detailed and supported essay on the topic at hand. My problem is always in staying below the minimum, given that there is so much to say on any given subject. I remember one paper in which I was limited to 10 pages and the difficulty I had in condensing 25 pages of notes to make it fit. How can your concern be about the number of words rather than the context and content of the essay?

Then, of course, you get into the conundrum of whether or not articles constitute words. If not, do you even have 350 words? Is your teacher really so anal that he/she is going to count words on every essay?

Were I your teacher, I would be looking for a well thought out, well constructed argument in a coherent, grammatically correct, properly spelled and punctuated essay was addressed as much of the assigned materials as possible, and I would most likely fail an essay composed of 350 or 500 words or drivel or an answer long on adjectives and short on ideas and thought, regardless of the length.

But, since your concern is getting through the assignment with the least possible effort, turn in something wherein you use only 70% of the allotted space and don't be too disappointed when a mediocre effort earns you a second-rate grade.

yes because it says 500 words "or less", so 350 is less than 500. Just don't go over 500 words.
