I think nowadays, it's not as negative as it used to be. For example, people that played with computers used to be geeks and nerds, now everybody messes around with computers.
p.s. XOXOXO's answer was good too, I agree!

Personally a geek is basically a person who has a high level of intelligence but inept in social occasions.
I think the term "geek" depends on how it's perceived. To the person saying it, it maybe meant as a derogatory/negative statement towards a geek. To the geek, it may be taken as slander or it's just simply ignored (depending on the person threshold of accepting insults).
To me "geek" is cool. I should know because I've been called a geek lots of time since my high school days.

Well, most people considered the people in our high school band to be "geeks"....so knowing how compassionate, well-versed, outspoken, intelligent, kind, and fun most of us REALLY were *grin*, we eventually started calling OURSELVES Geeks.
While it is generally used to be hurtful or degrading, most true geeks aren't bothered by the term, because they know that those people trying to be mean are just going to be working at the local Wal-Mart for the rest of their lives. They'll never accomplish anything more than getting THEIR kids into the same football/cheerleading positions they themselves fought so hard for. And they'll never understand, at the reunion, why you wanted to go so far and do so much, even if it's just living comfortably happy with a family of your own in a state and town OTHER than the one you grew up in.
Politics-Shmaulitics. Nobody cares if you make Homecoming Queen if you act like Hitler.

the term "geek" can refer to a person who is into a certain field of study. A Photographer can be a "Photo Geek", a historian can be a "History Geek"
I don't consider the word Geek as being negative.

Positive. I would rather hang out with a geek who can think on his feet, than some stupid-*** good looker whose dumbness will aggravate the hell out of me....don't you get frustrated when the person you are talking to doesn't know the meaning of the words you are saying?????

I think it is a derogatory word to deem a person with asperger's syndrome.
