I think the entire NIH budget comes down to about 20$ per person per year in the US.

That's a lot of bang for your buck, given the pace of medical progress.

On the other hand, every american spends 5$ per day on the defense budget.

I wish every American could spend $5. a day on science
funding. When will people get it - a healthy America is a
strong America.

It's not that funding of science is so much the issue, it's how science data and results have been suppressed by the Bush administration. Everything from global warming to energy to stem cell research has been quashed to better fit the administrations line. This is a crime and an outrage - science is a technique of finding facts through a system of experimentation and debate. When the debate is stifled, and the results are censored, science fails.

We are spending too much on science.
The Federal government is there to protect us from invasion and create money for us.
what if the government calls science "going to a Wizards game"
they do not have a chance of going bankrupt like a company.
The reason for the great pace of medical progress is because of companies like Pfizer not our government.

I'm not sure that what we spend -- via taxation -- on science is producing science. I've seen the growth of a major faith, specifically global-warming, come from these funds.

Better to get the gov out of the funding biz. They should stick to defense, police & courts.

It is not the government's job to spend money on this. We spend too much if it is $1. It needs to be funded privately.

Nope, can't find this listed as a federal mandate anywhere. If it's so important, let private industry fund it. They'll figue out how to do it profitiably.
