Because the stupid driver doesn't understand how a thermostat works, or his is not working and he's too lazy to fix it.

As the other posters said, it keeps the engine temps up in the engine. Diesels don't make as much engine heat as gas engines do. Too good a cooling system will run the engine too cold. Fuel costs and fuel consumption go up, the exhaust blows black smoke and the truck will be down on power.

Older trucks used to have adjustable slats or vents in the grille. The driver could pull a lever, which opened/closed the vents over the radiator. This was an easier way to set engine temperature in cold weather. Not sure if any trucks are still built like this.

Isn't this the best time of year? When you can start grilling on the flat bed again. I love the way the diesel smoke enhances the flavor of the burgers. I think cousin Jed was the weirdest thing we had to pull off. He was trying to make perfect patties by pressing them in the piston holes, when he got caught on the fan belt. Uncle Zeke was just about to fire up the grill when he realized he was about to disembowel Jed. Yeah. Grillin time is fun.

To keep their radiators running okay. Otherwise, snafu hits and you have no heat either in the cab. You can use this in cars and regular pick-ups for the same reasons.

it restricts the flow of air causing the radiator to heat up faster thus causing the truck to warm up faster

This is done to help actually keep the heat in the engine. Diesels need to run hotter to run efficiently.

Some do it because they are diesel and has something to do with the engine running more efficiently against the cold.

to raise the engine to a more acceptable temperature . it helps the heater warm up faster ,as the deisel engine takes much longer to reach operating temperature than a gas
