I have a website builder. Adobe to be more specfic. You know like Yahoo and Homestead have domain hosting. I know how to program asp, php, cgi etc... so how can I make my own domain name without buying from a provider?

You don't. You are not a registered provider, or more accurately, a domain registrar. ICANN is the official body that regulates domain names, and it allows organizations to become a registrar. This costs quite a bit of money. You'll pay a few thousands, and then demonstrate you have something like $70,000 in capital.

Or, you could buy one from an accredited domain registrar.

You can get the rights to any available domain for about $10-20USD per year. Domains are cheap. If you do not have a server or a connection suffiicient to handle a busy server, you may want to consider a hosting package, they vary a lot in price but I believe you can get that for very good prices at sites like www.godaddy.com
If you want to use Server side languages like PHP and ASP, you will want to make sure your hosting package has support, or that it can be added. Also check what you get for database server access too, guessing you will likely want that.

I think the two posts missed the question even though they sounded more knowledgable about the process, here's my take: you cannot make up www.myestore.com out the blue and expect me to be able to go there, you have to rent that name from a domain name registrar for $20 or around that price, the rest of self-host, cohost, provider-host is separate business.

Here's my answer: you can actually make your own domain name extension. But you WON'T be able to get it "broadcast" throughout the internet because there are authorities (especially the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers/ICANN) tasked with handling the responsibilities of managing its intricate components.

Without going into detail, I'll tell you this: it DOES cost a lot of money and technical know-how to be able to get your own domain name to be "displayed" to anyone who logs onto the internet itself, roughly 5 figures. It's not as cheap as people tend to think, and it entails a lot of responsibility most people seriously won't be able to handle.

Bottom line: it's not as simple as many of us want to believe. So if you want to have your own .com domain name or whatever extension, you HAVE to sign up with a domain registration company (preferably a "registrar").

I don't think so. But you can still get free domain name as co.nr etc.. But if you like to build proper website, then you need proper domain name like www.yourname.com.
