German Army retained a supply line which was adequate when close to Germany. But as in the Russian invasion, they found out as countless armies before them that, "The further you are from the mother country, the more problems you have with the supplies." There was mentioned that one time a train had a load of shoes instead of the requested cold weather clothing that was requested. The German Army also foraged for food from the countryside and the towns they were in.

As today, there were basically three "layers" if one will of rations:
(I don't remember the Wehrmacht terms for these though)
1- Fresh food. Field bakeries/kitchens were assigned at the battalion level (roughly 500 troops) They prepared food delivered by supply folks, or what could be bought from the local populace. Contrary to popular opinion, Wehrmacht troops (and to be fair some units of the Waffen SS) would buy food at market value, and pay Reichsmarks.
2- Canned Food ("Combat Rations"). These were canned foods issued when #1 wasn't available, or the tactical situation didn't allow for hot food. If you watch the series "Band of Brothers", you can see the E-Co characters eating Wehrmacht rations.
3- Emergency/"Eisen" Rations. These consisted of high-energy candy bars, and the standard 1/4 loaf of black bread, and sausage that every troop was supposed to keep in their pack. The candy-type rations were originally developed for the Fallschirmjaeger (airborne) troops. They became so popular they went on general issue. (This is not unlike the genesis of the Hooah bar; originally developed for Rangers/SpecOps, is now on general issue.) The bread/sausage was to tide one over for 24 hrs, until a field kitchen could be brought up.
As far as grabbing stuff, well the Allies were not above appropriating stuff from farmhouses they encountered. Troops are troops regardless of side. In general, the Western Allies were much better fed, than the Germans, who in turn were better off than the Russians, who did have to scrounge for food.
