As Thomas Hobbes said "nasty, brutish and short"!

Slavery was more widespread in the southern plantation economy, but never think it didn't exist in some form in almost every state.

The election of Andrew Jackson expanded the franchise (the right to vote) to more and more men regardless of their land-owning status (notice I said "men"). Therefore, many were far more interested in voting for the Democrats (Jackson, Van Buren, Taylor, Pierce, Buchanan) though I will admit the latter three were more influenced by souther slave holders than yeoman farmers.

Most farmers in America at that time were subsistence or only slightly productive.

~Farmers of what, and where? Mostly, they got up, did some work, did a little recreation, had something to eat and drink, went to bed, procreated on occassion (far too often, but if you can't afford to buy help, you've pretty much have to make your own), slept and then started all over again the next day. Not much changes, does it?

A very few did. Very conservative and parochial. Back-breaking labor.
