Since the creation of earth, the planet has been in a spin, slowly halting its rotation. As the moon slowly drifts away, the earth slowly stops spinning, although it will take millions of years. The spinning comes from the violent beginning of the solar system. Some scientists believe that the moon was caused by a giant collision with another planet. This tore a large chunk of the infant earth away, and it became trapped in earth's gravity, becoming the moon. This cataclysmic impact caused earth's rotation on its axis. This relationship will not last forever. If the sun swells before the moon drifts away, the moon will disintegrate into the flaming gas ball.
