My current processor is this one:

Intel Pentium 4 640 Prescott 3.2GHz LGA 775 Processor Model BX80547PG3200F

It's reasonably fast but it runs very hot (close to 70 C when I load it with matlab work)

I want to know if a 2.4Ghz dual core will be significantly faster and cooler when two programs are running??
That is, will this processor
(Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 Conroe 2.4GHz LGA 775 Processor Model BX80557E6600) be much faster??

Here are some benchmarks that compare the two. I have already selected the processors for you, so just go through the different benchmarks to get a good comparison:http://www23.tomshardware.com/cpu.html?modelx=33&model1=432&model2=456&chart=181

It will be a lot faster than any pentium 4's. For the heat, that depends what you use to cool it. If you use the fan that came with it, then expect 40-50C degrees. If you use an after market fan such as the Zalman vf 9500 along with Arctic Silver 5 thermal paste, then expect temperatures from 20-35C. The Arctic Silver 5 alone(when I say alone, I mean with the stock fan) drops temperature about 5C. The longer you use the computer, the cooler the CPU will become because that is how the paste works.
Good Luck!

ghzs dont matter the amount of transistors matter their is 500,000,000 transirtors on every core 2 duo chip
