the pump replacement at a dealership(highly reccomende) is usually around 300 to 400$,depending on where you live. some will let you bring in you own pump, but cannot warranty it as it is not theirs.the best thing is to get it done at a dealership, using their parts ,as you will get abetter warrant and quality of work.as you might have guessed, i'm a technician at a dealership.

Some power steering systems can suffer from what is called "morning sickness". When the car is first driven after sitting for several hours, particularly on cold winter mornings, the power steering can fail to work until it warms up, typically after several minutes of driving. I had this occur frequently on a Toyota Tercel several years ago, and I know someone who has it regularly in a Dodge Caravan. It can apparently be fixed, but I was advised by my mechanic at the time that it wasn't worth the cost. The vehicle can be driven normally without further damaging the steering, it's just harder to steer for the first few minutes. I'm not sure if this is the cause of your problem, but if you find the problem is worse when the engine is cold, it might be.

you could probably buy the part yourself, I dont see why not. It shouldn't be too much to install it either, unless they have to pull the motor to do it, then it gets expensive. Not sure on this but I'd guess a power steering pump runs about $150. A guy at work wrecked his power steering pump (leak on the line and the pump seized) so he went out and bought one, and installed it in no more than half an hour, that shouldn't be too expensive.

Probably between 1 and 3 hundred bucks.
The question would be if you wanted new or used part from auto salvage? Mechanic may allow U 2 buy part, but may not guarantee same.
To get correct part you need
year
date of manufacture, sometimes exact! This can sometimes be found on sticker by drivers door.
engine size
with or without air conditioning
And finally vehicle identification number. Would be on dashboard
seen through the windshield, on the registration and title of vehicle.
Are you sure it needs to be replaced? Is it full of fluid and did you fill and then turn the wheels back and forth to remove any air in the system?

The pumps are not expensive and easy to change. Be careful though. I helped a teenager change one on his Silverado and he had a lot of trouble later. It seems the pump came apart inside and pieces of metal got in his power steering gear. He was in a hurry and avoided my advice to backflush the steering gear and paid for it later by buying another new pump.

I have had a couple of power steering pumps go out in my chevys. They aren't too expensive, and definitely one of the cheapest around to replace. Go to an auto parts store and find out how much the part will cost.
Fixing it is easy, really. You just remove the belt, undo 2 bolts holding the pump to the engine, remove a bolt in the back where the hoses run, and there you go...

first ,it depend on where you go to buy are replace it. i do not know the state you in, but yes most will let you buy the part ,an they put it on, but a steering pump is not hard to put on, also you can buy a kit to rebuilt the pump, but finding a shop to do this will be hard, if you have the money i say buy new, but if not look around a use part shop , for a good deal

A mechanic once told me you would never take a steak to a restaurant and ask them to cook it for you. It's extremely rare to have problems with a power steering pump. Maybe you should get a second opinion.

The part is expensive and it will probably cost $100+ to fix.

I would go to a salvage yard and get one off of a wrecked vehicle.

Then take it to a shade tree mechanic and get them to repair it.
